Early Comic Characters And My Latest eBay Product Range

A few weeks ago in a local auction saleroom I spotted a car mascot depicting Bruce Bairnsfather’s famous cartoon character ‘Old Bill’.  ‘Old Bill’ was a private infantryman in the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War.  He smoked like a chimney and got into all kinds of trouble with his superiors as can be seen in hundreds of cartoons drawn by Bairnsfather and published in magazines and newspapers, also on postcards and numerous other popular collectibles.

Back to the bronze car mascot depicting Bill which sold for just over £300, a snip for any collector, even more of a bargain for the new owner who told me he uses these early iconic designs to make wax moulds from which to create modern day collectibles.

His designs are made from pewter, sometimes bronze, and they sell at up to three hundred pounds a time as keyrings and garden ornaments, car mascots and door knockers.  This person does not sell his goods on eBay, thankfully for me because that’s where I intend to promote my reproduction items, instead he markets through collectors’ magazines and direct to buyers at antiques and collectors’ fairs.

I did however find someone selling reproduction Old Bill car mascots on eBay, that being ‘tiercell’ who promotes other repro items alongside and looks to be doing well.  Go take a look and search for other eBayers selling similar items and learn what you can from their experience and knowledge.  But leave my listings well alone!

I’m saying this tongue in cheek, of course, because I really don’t have time to start any new venture, on eBay or off, but there’s a definite and possibly very profitable challenge awaiting our readers here which I’ll tell you more about now.

Basically, from a few hours research I’ve discovered numerous early collectable items being recreated today, usually in bronze and pewter, sometimes silver and gold, and I’ve found a wealth of web sites to help our readers make those designs or outsource the task to others.

Start with the following and you’ll see what I mean:

I’ve learned that most reproduction items begin with clay or wax about 10mm thick which is used to cover the original item to form a mould into which goes the pewter or resin other substance used to create the end product (Source: www.resinrecasting.co.uk).

The finished piece is subsequently painted or antique bronzed and finally offered for sale.

The same site advises about creating models not only in resin, but also in cold cast bronze which produces a longer lasting, more antique looking end result which is perfect for promoting to eBay’s mammoth collector base.

Just be sure to emphasise your products are new not old and call them something like ‘reborn’ which sounds better than ‘reproduction’.

Oh yes, and be sure the item is in the public domain before you copy it or you could have all your profits confiscated in legal fees for breach of copyright.

Pewter is a particularly easy and inexpensive raw material to begin with, having a low melting point and being obviously less dangerous if spilled, as well as being easier to clean from pots or pans used in the melting process.

If you like this idea, as I think you will, you’ll find more about creating reproduction items from pewter at:

http://www.ehow.com/list_6748590_techniques-casting-pewter-jewelry.html#ixzz0us3TT6QH (highlight and copy that url from your eLetter and paste it into your browser, then site back and prepare to be amazed).

And there you have it, a short introduction to a potentially massive new business start up with millions of collectors to target on eBay!
