Three High Demand Products to Take from the Public Domain and Resell on eBay
I’m always looking for new ways products to take from the public domain and add to my own businesses, on and off the Internet. In particular I find eBay one of the easiest and most profitable places to sell whatever goods I've recreated from the public domain. Such as these products which are among my own most popular and profitable public domain derivatives:
1. Vintage Public Domain Knitting Patterns.
2. Vintage Public Domain Art Prints.
3. Public Domain Local History Books

Knitting patterns are big sellers on eBay where recently a dozen or so patterns fetched between thirty and fifty pounds in the UK, and other making thirty to forty dollars each on eBay.com. Those were original patterns, not copies, but I’m willing to bet at least some bidders were more interested in making goods featured in those patterns than were actually keen to own the patterns themselves. If I’m wrong and recent high price bidders are vintage pattern collectors not knitters, then I’m still certain those vintage patterns would fetch almost as much money for inexpensive reprints as their original Victorian and Edwardian counterparts.
There’s evidence to back my reasoning, in the shape of eBayers already achieving double and triple figures sales of knitting and other craftwork patterns from the public domain, and generating double figure profits each time.
Most prolific is eBayer - schmetterlingtag - who has sold 194 copies of his public domain products, mainly crochet and other craftwork patterns, in the last thirty days, and more than 2,050 in the past year.
Let me give you just a few examples of the type of patterns being sold as public domain derived products on eBay, not only by schmetterlingtag:
- Knitting patterns with ‘Titanic Era’ in their title may be completely unconnected with the greatest shipping tragedy of all time, but they will nonetheless respond to many searches made on eBay for ‘Titanic’. And some of those searchers will be tempted to buy. But words used in your listing must genuinely reflect whatever you are selling, or you will be charged with keyword spamming and have your listings removed.
- Victorian sock and glove patterns are also very popular, and on a regular basis, so just one pattern taking a few hours to develop from the public domain can generate a regular income for you and me.
- ‘Twenty Knitted Flower Designs’, I’m not sure if it was an original or reprinted pattern, but it sold for forty dollars plus and attracted 18 bids. Scope for a public domain derived pattern showing how to knit or crochet flowers? One important thing to bear in mind - you need images of finished items to attract interest from craftworkers - so you will either have to create the finished items yourself or pay someone to do it for you. The investment will almost always be worthwhile!
- Patterns for dolls’ clothing, even just socks, also for making dolls and teddy bears are especially popular in the UK and USA, in public domain and original versions.

I’m talking here about reproducing Victorian paintings and drawings featuring, in my case, dogs and horses, but the idea is equally profitable for vintage artwork featuring cats and children, birds and plants, ships and thousands of very different and hugely popular subjects.
So I sell reproduction prints of Vero Shaw’s paintings of dogs (they’re taken from Shaw’s Book of the Dog published in 1880), Sir Edwin Landseer’s canine paintings from postcards in my own extensive collection, Cecil Aldin’s comic dog drawings from books I buy purely for their illustrations, and that represents just a few of my own most profitable product sources.
Of 1,000 plus prints in my eBay shop and my outside eBay websites, I attract one hundred buyers and more every month, each paying £20 a throw in the UK and $35 in the USA for prints that cost me just pennies to produce. Work out the profits on that!
But even my profits pale into insignificance compared to other eBayers specialising entirely in sales of dog prints, many but not all from the public domain, and some having many thousands of different prints listed and fetching upwards of one hundred pounds each on eBay. Go check them out for yourself, my own particular favourite dog print seller being ‘canineartconnections’, alongside eBayers:
- davil*doll - sells montage prints from antique magazines and newspapers.
- bibliografi - dog prints and other items, not necessarily from the public domain, but great place to look for marketing ideas.
- acerplus - mainly topographical images

As people grow more interested in researching their ancestry, demand is bound to grow for books and documents to aid their research, such as local history books and maps, images of people and places, magazines and newspapers, and so on. And that’s why we’re currently seeing a massive increase in websites being advertised on television to help people study their ancestry and charging hefty membership fees. So imagine how your reproduction documents costing just a few dollars apiece might compare to paying hundreds of dollars, or pounds or other currency, to access similar information online.
As an example, I took a book from the public domain, featuring the history of Hylton Castle, near Sunderland, and published in 1882, which I then scanned into a ‘Word’ file and converted to pdf format and now sell on eBay, also on my own local history sites via ClickBank, for a minimum ten dollars profit each time. I won’t reveal the original book, because that would leave me wide open to someone keying the title into Google’s search box and downloading the original version themselves and making just as much money from this book as I do myself.
I also sell reproduction postcards and photographs, especially from originals attracting multiple bidders and making fifty pounds minimum profit on eBay. So my own recent record price breaking postcards and photographs, for Ebberston in North Yorkshire, for example, and numerous other Yorkshire villages, all fetching fifty to £150 per card in the last thirty days, are now being offered as copies at ten pounds a time ….. and selling!
I’m not alone in specialising in local history, as the following eBayers prove:
- 7classics - topographical images on CD.
- timecamera - topographical images, also vintage catalogues and famous people images on CD.
- lunagirl-images - large array of images on CD from someone also selling at Etsy.com so presumably doing very nicely! = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =5.
