Military Badges – An Uncommonly High Profit Collectible by Avril Harper author of 'Bank Big Profits Selling Vintage Topographical View Postcards on eBay' and 'Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines and Selling Them on eBay'.
Auction research company Terapeak say military badges are among the hottest sellers on eBay as the following recent eBay finishing prices will show:
- BEF 1914 Sterling Argyll & Sutherland Glengarry Badge - £445.95
- Silver Plaid Brooch 1 Renfrewshire VB Argyll Sutherland - £415.00
- Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Cased Medallion - £260.00
NOTE: Can you see how three items from Argyll & Sutherland regiments appear among the top recent highest prices paid for military badges on eBay? That makes it a good idea to look for badges from this regiment at boot sales and flea markets, also in auction lots, but don’t expect all A & S badges to fetch such high prices. It’s usually worthwhile risking a few pounds on early military badges, but no more than a pound or two without either taking a price catalogue with you or a laptop or small computer to check out recent prices on eBay.
Back to high price badges selling recently on eBay:
- Original 7th Dragoon Guards Horse Brass Badge - Original - £241.00
- Victorian Officers Helmet Plate Genuine 100% Guarantee - £225.00
- Cheshire Regt. Group Hallmarked Silver Badge TTC - £170.00
- Original 3rd Dragon Guards Horse Brass Badge – Original - £158.00
- Australian Military Police Badge by Stokes and Son - £156.66
- 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars Officers Forage Cap Badge - £145.00
The reason I personally consider military badges a particularly good product to buy, especially as complete collections at local auction salerooms, is that so many very different badges exist for each of many thousands of regiments worldwide. And that means no one but a real expert can identify every badge in a lifetime’s collection.
And that by implication also means non-specialist staff in general salerooms are unlikely ever to recognise badges worth hundreds of pounds among a multitude of very common designs in big bundle lots.
These high price items can, and very regularly do sell in lots of ten or twenty or sometimes hundreds of different badges for round about £150 a time.
I know that for certain because three weeks ago I bought 65 British military cap badges locally, they cost me £150 and returned three hundred pounds pure profit on eBay.
The trick with big bundles like this is to auction all items individually, using clear images and a low starting price - £4.99 is good - then let common items make you a small profit each and allow expert collectors to determine the finishing price of their rarer counterparts.
