Buy Books from Library Clearances And Sell Them for High Profits on eBay by Avril Harper author of 'Bank Big Profits Selling Vintage Topographical View Postcards on eBay' and 'Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines and Selling Them on eBay'.

All public libraries have limited space and must offload older books - also CDs and DVDs - to make room for new and that’s why you’ll find regular sales taking place in libraries and advertised for a few weeks on library notice boards.  You can find some great bargains at library sales for goods costing pennies or a few pounds at most with potential to fetch profits of five or ten pounds apiece.

That may not sound like a lot of profit until you consider it takes about half an hour to pick up and pay for twenty ex-library books and another two hours to list them on eBay.  Then if those twenty books fetch just a fiver pure profit apiece, that’s one hundred pounds you’ve just made.  So you really can consider this a full-time business, or a part-time venture where you use your spare time to make money for holidays or Christmas presents.

But you won’t be buying rare antiquarian books or signed first editions or items in pristine condition. That’s because most books have library stickers and inked cachets that render them unattractive to book collectors.   Add to this the fact that librarians know a great deal about books old and new which means rare or really valuable items are unlikely to be on public loan.  More likely those better items will be accessed under supervision only and never sold for pennies!

But you will be able to buy items that appeal to a large audience on eBay,  mainly for information or reader appeal, to golf and cricket enthusiasts, for example, dog and cat lovers, cooks and homemakers, antiques dealers and travellers, all wanting to learn more about their special interest.

It’s buyers of these and other niche market non-fiction books that fare better on eBay and which can attract multiple bidders and high finishing prices even for books - also CDs and DVDs - in less than perfect condition.  The reason is, people wanting information for its own sake rarely care how it’s presented as long as the goods are intact and inexpensive and represent good value for money.

So I strongly recommend you focus on subjects with wide market appeal, preferably with their own special product category or sub-category on eBay - in itself a sign of high bidder and buyer interest - and especially focussing on subjects that have fetched high prices recently on eBay.

Just one piece of advice before we look at best sellers, being that it’s usually best to avoid DVDs and CDs you can’t try out before buying and which could be unworkable, unlike books you can study page by page to check for dirt and grime and missing pages.

Keep up to date with library sales existing in your area by telephoning for regular updates.  You’ll find telephone numbers of village and larger town and city libraries in ‘Yellow Pages’ available in all public libraries.

Let me give you some examples of subjects for books that have recently fetched good prices on eBay:

Railway subjects and books about other forms of transportation (notably cars, buses, trams) - especially filled with photographs.

Grand Prix and Motor Racing - again the more photographs they contain the more they’re like to fetch.

Motorcycle Racing – ditto regarding photographs.

-  Biographies of Famous Motorcar, Motorbike and Bicycle Racers – same message once again regarding photographs.

Fishing is a perennial resident among record price fetching books on eBay, usually for antiquarian books and first editions, but there’s also a healthy market for books bought for reading and not just collecting purposes.  Various forms of fishing appear to be popular, notably fly fishing.

Birds and their eggs, especially with illustrations and plates.

Birds of specific topographical interest, such as recent high prices fetched for books about birds of Iraq, Canary Islands, Suffolk, Scotland.

Birds of Prey.

Most library sales have books sorted into specific subjects all on the same table or nest of tables.  And that makes it a good idea, once you know which subjects are currently fetching the best prices on eBay, to be first in the queue before sales open to the public from where to fight and bully your way to stalls selling those highest price titles.

Buy Individually, Sell in Bulk and Expect 100% Higher Profits

Look for high numbers of books on the same topic at library sales and buy all you can of those currently fetching good prices on eBay.  You can list these items individually or cut working time and fees by listing them in bulk for possibly even higher profits than from separate listings.  This is because a range of titles in one listing can attract multiple bidders and start a bidding war between people who only want one title but have to buy all!

You’ll need to check past completed auctions on eBay to see which subjects are currently lending themselves to bulk offerings.

I’ve checked currently successful bulk listings and discovered the following are more likely to fetch higher prices in bundles than from separate listings: craft books, cookery, gardening, boating, motor racing.

A writer of an eBay guide which unfortunately I don’t recommend you read, mainly because it’s very long and not very good and contains just one particularly useful tip being the one I’m revealing now, suggests offering three to five books in one listing but no more.  The reason isn’t obvious but my own research suggests it’s something to do with expecting more bidders and possibly higher profits from two listings of five books each than one listing of ten or more titles.
